Can You Wash a Baby Stroller or Car Seat Fabric? Safety Limits for Singapore Parents

Baby gear collects milk, food, sweat, dust and outdoor dirt, but not every part of a stroller or car seat can be cleaned in the same way. The fabric may be washable or suitable for professional extraction, while harnesses, buckles and structural components may have stricter cleaning limits.

Baby Gear Gets Dirty Quickly

A stroller can travel through shopping centres, lifts, pavements, carparks and playgrounds in a single day.

Inside the home, it can also collect milk, food, juice, sweat and dust.

StandByBed specifically lists prams, strollers, baby car seats, cots, cot mattresses and high chairs among the baby items it deep cleans.

The important part is knowing which components can safely receive a deeper clean.

Stroller Fabric Is Different From the Frame

For example, Nuna's TRVL instructions say to clean the frame, plastic parts and fabric with a damp cloth, avoid abrasive cleaners and bleach, and follow the fabric care label for washing and drying instructions. Nuna also advises against storing the stroller in a damp place.

That means you shouldn't automatically treat the entire stroller as one washable item.

The fabric, frame, wheels and other components may have different care requirements.

What About a Nuna Stroller?

A Nuna stroller is still a stroller that gets used outdoors.

Its price or brand doesn't make the fabric immune to milk spills, food, dust, sweat or everyday exposure.

Nuna's own care instructions emphasise checking the fabric care label and avoiding bleach and abrasive products.

So whether you're cleaning a Nuna, Joie or another stroller, the manufacturer's instructions should come before any cleaning method.

Car Seats Need Even More Care

Car seats have an additional consideration: safety components.

For example, Graco's 4Ever DLX instructions allow the seat pad and canopy to be machine washed in cold water on a gentle cycle, but specify surface cleaning for the harness and say not to immerse the harness straps in water.

This is why a car seat should never simply be soaked from top to bottom.

The exact rules vary by manufacturer and model.

Don't Treat the Harness Like Upholstery

The fabric cover and harness serve completely different purposes.

The cover can sometimes be removed and washed according to the manufacturer's instructions.

The harness is part of the restraint system.

Graco specifically instructs users to surface-clean the harness with mild soap and a damp cloth rather than immersing it.

If you're unsure about a particular car seat, check its manual before booking any cleaning service.

What Can Professional Baby Gear Cleaning Do?

Professional cleaning is most useful for the fabric components that are suitable for deeper cleaning.

StandByBed's baby-equipment process includes:

  • Inspect: Check the fabric, straps and frame.
  • Pre-treat: Organic stains such as milk and food can receive enzyme pre-treatment.
  • Deep clean and extract: Remove dirt and buildup from suitable fabric. Vacuum and dry : Most suitable items are dry within 2–4 hours with good airflow.

This is different from simply putting a stroller or car seat in the washing machine.

How Much Does Baby Gear Cleaning Cost?

StandByBed's published starting price is $100 for the first two baby-equipment items, with additional items priced at $15 each.

For example, a parent could combine:

Pram + car seat: $100 starting price
Pram + car seat + cot mattress: $115 starting price
Pram + car seat + cot mattress + high chair: $130 starting price

Steam sanitisation can also be added where appropriate.

When Should You Deep Clean a Stroller?

There isn't a universal number of months between stroller cleans.

Instead, consider what the stroller has been exposed to.

A stroller used every day and taken outdoors will naturally accumulate more than one used occasionally.

Deep cleaning becomes particularly relevant after food or milk spills, prolonged outdoor use, visible staining or a period of heavy everyday use.

The Main Rule: Follow the Manufacturer

The biggest mistake with baby equipment is assuming that every fabric component can be cleaned the same way.

Check the care label. Check the manual.

Separate removable fabric from safety-critical components.

And if a manufacturer says a harness should only be surface cleaned, don't soak or extract it just because the rest of the upholstery can be deep cleaned.

Baby gear can be professionally cleaned, but the safest cleaning method is always the one that respects the product's construction and manufacturer instructions.
