How Often Should You Clean Your Sofa? Singapore Guide

Most sofas in Singapore need a professional deep clean every 6 to 12 months. If you have young children, pets, or anyone with allergies in the home, aim for every 6 months. If it's just two adults and light use, once a year is usually enough. That's the short answer. Here's what actually drives it.

What "cleaning" means here

There are two different things people mean by cleaning a sofa, and they run on very different schedules.

Weekly maintenance — vacuuming the surface, cushions and crevices. This lifts loose dust, crumbs and pet hair before they work their way into the fibres. Ten minutes, once a week.

Deep cleaning — hot water extraction that pulls out what's soaked below the surface: sweat, body oils, skin cells, dust mites and their waste. Vacuuming can't reach this. It's the 6–12 month job.

Doing the first well doesn't remove the need for the second. It just slows down how fast the second becomes urgent.

Here’s what grime from a sofa looks like.

Why Singapore is different

Two local factors shorten the interval compared to a temperate climate.

Humidity. Singapore sits at around 80% relative humidity year-round. Fabric holds that moisture, and dust mites thrive in exactly those conditions. A sofa here accumulates a heavier biological load than the same sofa in a dry climate.

Air-conditioning and closed windows. Most Singapore homes run aircon with windows shut, which means less air exchange and more of what settles in your fabric staying there.

How to know yours is due

You don't need to track dates. The signals are usually obvious once you look for them:

  • The seat cushions have darkened where people actually sit
  • There's a faint smell when you press into the fabric
  • Someone in the house wakes up congested or has eczema that flares indoors
  • You've never had it deep cleaned and you've had it more than a year
  • A light-coloured cloth comes away grey when you rub the armrest

That last one is the quickest test. Damp white cloth, firm rub on the arm where hands go. What comes off is what's sitting on the surface — and there's considerably more below it.

Adjust for your household

Every 6 months: homes with toddlers, pets, anyone with asthma or eczema, or a sofa that gets daily heavy use.

Every 12 months: two adults, light use, no pets, good ventilation.

Sooner than either: after an illness in the house, after a spill that soaked in, or if you've just bought a second-hand sofa. Buy used, clean before you use it — you have no idea what it's been through.

The cost argument

A fabric sofa in Singapore typically runs $1,500 to $4,000. A deep clean is a small fraction of that, and the main thing that kills a sofa isn't wear — it's embedded grit acting like sandpaper on the fibres every time someone sits down, plus odours that eventually stop coming out.

Cleaning it twice a year for a few years costs less than replacing it once.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just clean my sofa myself?

You can maintain it yourself — vacuuming weekly and blotting spills immediately makes a real difference. What you can't do without a machine is extract what's soaked into the padding. Consumer sprays and shampoos mostly move dirt around and can leave residue that attracts more of it.

Does a fabric protector mean I can clean less often?

It buys you time on spills, which is worth having. It doesn't stop skin cells, sweat and dust mites accumulating in the fibres, so the deep clean interval stays roughly the same.

How long does professional sofa cleaning take?

A standard 3-seater takes about 45–60 minutes. An L-shape takes 1 to 1.5 hours. Most sofas are dry within 2–4 hours with good airflow.

Is it worth cleaning an old sofa?

Usually yes, if the frame and cushions are still sound. Fabric that looks past it is often just heavily soiled rather than worn out. If the foam has collapsed, that's a different problem and cleaning won't fix it.
