How Often Should You Deep Clean Your Mattress in Singapore?
Your sheets and mattress protector may be washed regularly, but the mattress underneath still collects sweat, skin cells, dust and moisture over time. Here's how Singapore's climate affects mattress buildup and how often a mattress should be professionally deep cleaned.
A mattress is one of the most-used pieces of furniture in your home, yet it's also one of the easiest to forget about when it comes to cleaning.
You change your bedsheets regularly. You may wash your mattress protector. But underneath those layers, the mattress itself continues collecting sweat, skin cells, dust and other debris.
Your mattress absorbs what you leave behind
You spend around a third of your day in bed.
Every night, your body gives off heat, moisture and skin cells. Some of that ends up in your sheets and protector, but some eventually works its way towards the mattress.
In Singapore's warm and humid climate, moisture can be particularly difficult to avoid. Even with air-conditioning, the mattress is exposed to hours of body heat every night.
Over time, that creates a fabric surface that can hold quite a bit more than it appears to.
So how often should it be cleaned?
For most homes, a professional mattress deep clean around once a year is a sensible baseline.
You may want it more frequently if the mattress is heavily used, shared by children, exposed to pets, or if someone regularly eats or drinks in bed.
A mattress in a guest room that's barely used is obviously different from the mattress you sleep on every night.
The important thing is not to wait until you can see a problem.
Vacuuming isn't the same as deep cleaning
Regular vacuuming is useful for removing loose dust and debris from the surface.
It doesn't, however, remove everything that has become embedded deeper into the mattress.
Professional cleaning uses specialised equipment to work through the fabric and extract what has accumulated inside.
This is particularly useful for mattresses that haven't been cleaned since they were purchased.
Your sheets don't clean the mattress
Clean bedding is important, but it doesn't replace mattress cleaning.
Think of your sheets and mattress protector as the first line of defence. They reduce how much reaches the mattress, but they're not an impenetrable barrier.
Eventually, the mattress itself still needs attention.
A clean sheet can make a bed feel fresh. A properly cleaned mattress deals with what's underneath it.
