Sofa, Mattress & Office Chair Deep Clean — Kovan Landed Home

Nine items across four storeys, cleaned and steam-sanitised in one 2.5-hour visit — a whole-home spring clean for a Kovan landed house, dog and all.

The situation

A four-storey landed home in Kovan, and a household doing what every home should but few get around to: a proper spring clean of the soft furnishings, not just the surfaces.

No young kids here, but there is a dog — and a big house lives with a fair bit of dust. Those two things quietly load up fabric more than anything else. Dust settles into every mattress and sofa cushion whether you see it or not, and a dog adds dander and the everyday build-up of a pet who shares the furniture. Neither shows on the surface. Both are exactly what a deep clean is for.

Nine items in one visit, spread across all four storeys: four queen mattresses, two two-seater sofas, a sofa bed, and two Ergotune office chairs.

What we did

Every item got hot water extraction followed by steam sanitisation — all nine.

Extraction lifts the embedded material out of the fabric: dust worked deep into the mattress tops, dander and everyday build-up in the sofas. Steam followed on every piece — high heat that kills dust mites and bacteria the extraction can't reach. That's the part that makes a mattress feel genuinely fresh rather than just vacuumed.

The three sofas — the two two-seaters and the sofa bed — were the most-used pieces in the house and took the most work. The four mattresses were cleaned on the top side, the side you sleep on. The two Ergotune chairs were the ones we were curious about: they're mostly mesh, not deep layers of padded fabric, so on paper there's very little in them to pull out. What came out told a different story — more on that below.

Grime from the sofa:

Moving between four storeys with the machine adds time, but the whole home was done — cleaned and steamed — in two and a half hours.

The result

Everything came up clean, and the extraction water told the story — as it always does. The three sofas produced the dirtiest tanks, simply because they're where the family, and the dog, spend the most time.

The clearest proof was the two Ergotune chairs. They're mostly mesh — no thick padding, nothing you'd think holds much of anything — and yet the extraction water from them came out dark grey. Here is exactly what came out of them:

If a mesh chair holds that much, it's worth stopping to think about what a padded mattress or a well-used sofa is holding underneath.

This is what a spring clean actually looks like once you go past the surface. The home was well kept and looked it — and the water still came out dark, because dust and pet build-up live inside the fabric, not on top of it. A vacuum and a wipe-down never reach it.
