Moving Into a Rental? Why Upholstery Cleaning Should Be on Your Checklist

Moving into a rental usually means checking the floors, wiping down surfaces and making sure everything is ready for your first day. But what about the fabric already in the home? At this Potong Pasir condominium, the sofa, bed and curtains all looked clean on the surface, but a deep clean revealed a surprising amount of dirt underneath.

A Clean-Looking Rental Isn't Necessarily Deep Cleaned

When moving into a rental, it's natural to assume that the previous tenant's furniture has already been cleaned. And from the outside, it might look that way.

The sofa looks fine. The bed looks clean. The curtains aren't visibly dusty.

But surface appearance doesn't always tell you what's sitting inside fabric.

The Fabric Is Often Overlooked

Hard surfaces are easy to wipe down before moving in.

Fabric is different.

A sofa can accumulate dust, sweat and body oils from years of use. Mattresses are exposed to body heat and moisture every night, while curtains constantly collect airborne dust.

These things aren't necessarily visible from the outside.

That's why upholstery and fabric cleaning can be worth considering when you're taking over a rental home.

A New Home Doesn't Mean New Furniture

For Ms Z, the move was into a rental condominium in Potong Pasir.

She wanted to have the existing sofa, bed and curtains deep cleaned before settling in.

On the surface, everything looked relatively clean.

But once the cleaning started, the amount of dirt coming out told a different story.

The Sofa Had the Most Buildup

The biggest surprise was the sofa.

Despite looking clean before the job, we managed to extract a huge amount of dirt from the upholstery.

This is one of the reasons extraction can be so revealing.

You don't necessarily see everything that's sitting within a fabric sofa until the dirt is actually pulled out.

Why Clean Before You Move In?

There is also something practical about cleaning before you start using the furniture yourself.

Once you've moved your belongings in and started living in the space, cleaning becomes another task to work around.

Doing the sofa, bed and curtains beforehand gives you a chance to start with the existing fabric surfaces properly cleaned.

It also means you're not relying entirely on how clean the previous occupant left them.

A Quick Pre-Move Clean

The entire job took around 45 minutes.

The sofa, bed and curtains were given a proper deep clean, despite all three looking relatively clean at first glance.

It's a good reminder when moving into a rental: what looks clean isn't necessarily deeply clean.

If you're taking over upholstered furniture from a previous tenant, it can be worth cleaning the fabric before making it part of your everyday home.
