Steam Cleaning vs Deep Extraction: What's the Difference?
Steam cleaning and deep extraction are both used for cleaning furniture and other surfaces, but they work in different ways and solve different problems. Here's how each method works and when deep extraction is more suitable for heavily used fabric furniture.
Steam cleaning and deep extraction are often grouped together as if they're the same thing.
They're not.
Both can be useful for furniture and mattresses, but they work differently and are suited to different cleaning jobs.
Steam cleaning uses heat
Steam cleaning relies on high-temperature steam.
The heat is particularly useful for sanitising surfaces and dealing with microorganisms such as dust mites and bacteria. It's also useful on certain fabrics and hard surfaces where you don't want large amounts of water introduced.
For curtains, some upholstery and hard surfaces, steam can be an effective part of the cleaning process.
But steam isn't designed to do exactly the same thing as extraction.
Deep extraction removes what has been loosened
Hot water extraction introduces water and cleaning solution into the fabric before powerful suction pulls the liquid back out.
The important part is the extraction.
The loosened dirt, grime and moisture are physically removed from the material rather than simply being heated.
This makes extraction particularly useful for heavily used sofas, mattresses, office chairs and carpets.
So which one is better?
Neither is automatically better.
It depends on what you're trying to achieve.
If the goal is high-temperature sanitisation, steam has an important role.
If the goal is removing embedded dirt from fabric, deep extraction is generally more appropriate.
For some jobs, using both methods makes sense.
For example, a fabric surface can be deep extracted to remove accumulated grime and then steam treated where appropriate.
Why does this matter for furniture?
A sofa that looks dusty and a sofa that's holding years of body oils aren't the same cleaning problem.
Surface dust can often be dealt with relatively easily.
Embedded grime needs to be loosened and physically removed.
That's why professional cleaning isn't simply about choosing the hottest machine or using the most water.
It's about matching the cleaning method to the material and the type of dirt that's actually there.
The right method is the one that removes the problem without damaging the fabric.
