How Dirty Is Your Mattress, Really? A Singapore Guide

Dirtier than it looks — and looking clean tells you almost nothing. The things that accumulate in a mattress sit below the surface, so a bed that appears spotless can still produce filthy extraction water. We see it on nearly every job.

Why you can't see it

A mattress is layers of foam and fibre under a fitted cover. Everything that comes off you at night — sweat, skin cells, body oils — soaks downward, past the surface, into material you never see.

Nothing about that process shows on top. By the time there's visible staining, it's been going on for years.

The clearest example we've had was a home in Geylang Bahru with two mattresses. The older one looked dirty and the family expected it. The newer one looked immaculate — the sort you'd swear didn't need doing. The extraction water from both was equally dirty.

Here is an example of one you can see, though not all are like that

What's actually in there

Sweat and body moisture. You lose moisture every night. In Singapore's climate, with the aircon on and windows shut, a mattress never fully dries out between uses.

Skin cells. Shed constantly, and they work into the fibres.

Dust mites and their waste. Mites feed on skin cells and thrive in warm, humid conditions — which describes a Singapore bedroom almost perfectly. It's the waste, not the mites, that triggers allergies.

Household dust. Settles on the top, gets pressed in every time you lie down.

Here is what a typical newish mattress looks like.

Why Singapore makes it worse

Around 80% relative humidity, year-round. Fabric holds that moisture, and dust mites need exactly those conditions to multiply.

Most homes also run aircon with windows closed, so there's less air exchange than in a climate where you'd open up the house. Whatever settles into your mattress tends to stay there.

The upshot: a mattress here accumulates faster than the same mattress somewhere dry and ventilated.

How to check yours

You can't see into a mattress, but there are signals:

  • Morning symptoms. Congestion, sneezing or itchy eyes on waking that clear up by mid-morning. This is the strongest signal there is.
  • Eczema that's worse in the morning, particularly in children.
  • A stale smell when you strip the bed — press your face close to the bare mattress.
  • Yellowish staining spreading out from where you sleep. That's sweat, and it means it's been happening a long time.
  • Age without cleaning. Over a year and never deep cleaned? It's due, regardless of how it looks.

The bit that surprises people

Almost everyone who books a mattress clean says some version of "it doesn't look that bad." Then they see the water.

That's why we film the extraction tank on every job and send it to the customer — their mattress, their water, not a stock photo from someone else's house. It's the only way to actually show what was in there.

Frequently asked questions

Does a mattress protector prevent this?

It reduces it, and it's worth having. But protectors catch what's on top — sweat and skin cells still work through seams and edges, and a protector does nothing for the underside.

Can I tell how dirty it is by looking?

No, and that's the whole problem. Visible staining means it's advanced. No staining means nothing either way.

Does vacuuming the mattress help?

It helps with surface dust and is worth doing monthly. It won't reach what's soaked into the layers below.

How dirty does a new mattress get?

Faster than most people expect. Sweat and skin cells start accumulating from the first night. A year-old mattress that's been slept in nightly has plenty in it.

What actually removes it?

Hot water extraction pulls the embedded material out of the fibres. Adding steam sanitisation uses high heat to kill dust mites and bacteria the extraction doesn't reach.
